Another Word from Eric Ortiz

I'm sure a lot of you guys are going to want to talk about either your hatred for the team from Florida or your condolences toward the Celtics, but over on the baseball diamond, John Lackey had another great performance.  At least this time he said everything went wrong.

From the infamous Eric Ortiz "Best Team Ever" article:

"Lackey should be better equipped to avoid the one-bad-inning syndrome."

7th inning:  5 runs, 2 hits, 3 walks, all runs scored with two outs.

John Lackey is my least favorite Red Sox player of all time. I've talked about how terrible he is at length. And so that's all I have to say on him is this--he sucks and is a complete waste of money. He should be ashamed of himself.

More than either of the December 6, 2006 guys? I think there are compelling arguments for all three.

Also, how bummed do you think John Henry is about the Lackey signing as it stands right now?

I bet he doesn't care, because the team from Florida and his business partner #6 are moving to the next round. #6 is definitely going to be up 20% this year.

I'll tell ya what, Gunn, I would not throw around the 'least favorite' tag around so lightly. In fact, although on numerous occasions we have all waxed poetic about our various favorite teams/players/games, etc., etc., I do not ever recall a least favorite list.

Who cracks your top 5? I think mine would include Bellhorn but I really need to think more about it before adding any new names. Varitek, like in real-life, would be the captain, although, like in real life, he does not really deserve to be. Otherwise, more thinking is in order here.

I do dislike him more than either Lugo or Drew. As much as JD Drew is painful to watch, at the very least he gave them a good 2008, 2009, and better than league average OPS+ for each season he's been in Boston. Now, I realize that we can't give too much weight to any single metric, but at least by some calculation he has had value to the Red Sox beyond what they'd be able to pick up for a "player to be named later."

Lugo was just never a good player at any point in his career, so nobody expected him to do anything and he was paid only about 35% of what Lackey is getting.

Lackey is just a bad pitcher. He can't perform at an average major league level. The stats bear that out. He doesn't hurt the team. He KILLS it. Of the three players at issue, he's paid the most, had the highest expectations, and hurts the team, far and away, the most. It's amazing to think that a guy that devoid of talent can make $83 million. I should have gotten into baseball when I was a kid.

I have to think about this list, but I can tell you that Lackey and Drew are definitely on it. So is Daisuke. I'll have to put something together by the end of the day.

Guys,

This might be an interesting topic of discussion. Especially considering that today is the Red Sox' only off-day in May, I might have to spend three hours tonight thinking about this and writing a post on it.

Would also like to get Pat's input on the five least likable Yankees. I think we've written about it before (my least-favorite Yankees, his least-favorite Red Sox), but I like this angle.

A lot of the candidates for this list (I'm thinking Beckett, Burkett, B-ho) eventually grew on me, so it's going to be a hard one.

Two questions! Both for the gunn.

1. Do you dislike lackey more than renteria?

2. Is there any way that renteria doesn't make your top 5?

The only thing I'll say about these questions is this: outside of what the big ticket has said about some of his least favorite mets at times, I have never heard a fan say such outrageous things about one player as the gunn did with renteria.

That said, if I know the gunn, lackey might be edging him. For these reasons alone, if gunn puts this list together (with his reasoning for each pick), it will be must-read hyd.
